WINSTED — Saturday, April 24 was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day across the country.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Division website, the nationwide event aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs.
It also aims to educate the public about the potential abuse of medications.
Locally, the Winchester Police Department, along with the Northwest Hills Prevention Connection, and the Torrington Area Health District, held an event outside of the Winchester Police Department where they took back any and all prescription drugs from residents, no questions asked.
Members of the Winchester Youth Service Bureau and Greenwoods Counseling Referrals also took part in the event, including recovery navigator Sarah Lauretti Toomey.
“We want to make sure that any medications that are unused, unwanted, or expired, do not get into the wrong hands of people who might misuse them or get sick of them,” Toomey said. “We all partnered to have this event and get the word out about it. We don’t want substances on the street if it can be prevented. If someone is struggling with addiction, help is available.”
The entrance of the Winchester Police Department at Town Hall has a prescription drug dropoff in the department’s lobby.
