TORRINGTON — For Kristy Barto, when the going gets tough, the tough make fudge.
Barto is the owner of the Nutmeg Fudge company, currently located at 11 Main Street until Dec. 31.
After Dec. 31, the store will go online at its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/The-Nutmeg-Fudge-Company-124645692659704 until its reopening at the end of February at 20 East Main Street.
Barto is a native of Poughkeepsie, NY, but has lived in Torrington for the past 25 years.
In an interview with The Winsted Phoenix, Barto said that she is a hotelier by trade.
“I spent the last 20 years building my career in the hotel industry, but it was hit very hard by the COVID pandemic this year,” Barto said. “By March, I found myself on furlough from my job. That was when I started to figure out what my next career choice would be. Eventually, I decided that I was going to go with fudge.”

Barto said that she has been making fudge for all of her adult life, but she never sold it commercially before until she started the company in June.
“There is a lot to be said for the creativity side of making fudge,” she said. “If you can think of a flavor, I can figure out how to create it. It’s not the same as just making sugar cookies. Making fudge is unique where you can always change it up a bit.”
Barto said that she makes around 30 different flavors of fudge, but she offers 18 to 20 different kinds at any given time.
She said that for the holiday season she is offering gingerbread, snickerdoodle, and eggnog flavors.

Also, Barto offers traditional flavors including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and peanut butter.
“We also offer a combination called a ‘buckeye’, which is a layer of peanut butter fudge and a layer of dark chocolate fudge,” she said. “I think everybody’s idea of a good piece of fudge is a little bit different. Traditionally, it’s nice and creamy. It kind of just melts away in your mouth. I tell every customer that this is the best fudge that they have had in a long time. And that it’s sure to be nostalgic and bring back memories of being at grandma’s house.”
Currently, the hours of the Nutmeg Fudge Company are Wednesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
