WINSTED — A fire that caused significant damage to a residence on Saturday, Oct. 24 is under investigation, according to Winsted Fire Department Chief James Lagassie.
The fire started around 11 a.m. at the residence of Lettie Gibb.
“She was the only one home at the time and she got out thanks to the help of East Hartland’s Fire Department Chief Chris Davis,” Lagassie said. “He just happened to be in the neighborhood. When he saw the smoke, he went and knocked on the door until she answered it. I’m not even sure if she knew that her house is on fire.”
Lagassie said that Gibb got out of her house unharmed.
“It was very good that she got out of her house safely,” Lagassie said. “The fire crews went in to extinguish the fire.”
He said that departments from Winsted, Winchester Center, Torrington, and New Hartford were on the scene, with the Pleasant Valley, and Norfolk departments on standby.
Lagassie said that the fire is still under investigation by both the town’s Fire Marshal and the State Fire Marshal.
He added that there were no other fires in the neighborhood at the time.
