NEW HARTFORD — Marandino’s Supermarket, located at 141 Main Street, has been sold.
The store originally opened up in New Hartford in 1963 by husband and wife Bias and Evelyn Marandino.
The family purchased land in 1970 and built the Marandino Plaza shopping center.
Both Peter Marandino and his brother John Marandino continued the store operations from their parents starting in 1973.
The new owner of Marandino’s is Mike Fernandez, a native of Nassau County, New York.
Fernandez officially purchased the grocery store on Saturday, June 27.
Fernandez is a native of Queens, New York.
He currently owns two Foodtown grocery stores in New York, one in Bayside and another in Queens.
Fernandez said that he has owned the Bayside store for over 15 years and the Queens store for two years.
He said that he is planning to move up to New Hartford and possibly sell his New York grocery stores.
“I came up here because I am looking for a life-changing moment for me and my family,” Fernandez told The Winsted Phoenix. “We’re most probably going to migrate out here sometime this year and make our residence here. We want to leave the city.”
Fernandez said that, since coming to New Hartford, the town’s residents have been very friendly.
“They are very nice, warm and welcoming,” he said. “I’ve had nothing but positive interactions with other customers. It’s big shoes to fill with Peter and John. I will never fill those shoes. All that I am looking to do is enhance what they already started many years ago.”
Fernandez said that he plans on renovating the store eventually.
“We’re going to put new technology in here and paint the store,” he said. “We want to provide services that the store didn’t have before like free delivery, an ATM, and add more products.”
Fernandez said that “what I would like customers to know is that I can’t replace Peter or John.”
“They are staples of the community and they will always be staples,” he said. “This is their store and all I am looking to do is enhance it. This is a family-owned and operated business. It’s going from one family to another. It’s my family now. All I did was join their family.”
