NORTHWEST CORNER — With local art galleries closed throughout the area during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northwest Arts Council has opened a virtual community art gallery on its website at https://sburr23.wixsite.com/covid19-arts/community-gallery
The gallery is looking for submissions from all creators in the Northwest Corner including visual art, dance, performance, music, video, writing, and poetry.
“We were inspired by what we have seen artists, musicians, and other creative people already making despite being faced with the challenge of COVID-19,” Council Program Director Maddie Stenson wrote via email to The Winsted Phoenix. “We wanted to create an opportunity for everyone to show their work and create a sense of virtual community. The theme of the virtual community gallery is ‘Resiliency.’”
Stenson wrote that art is more important than ever in these times.
“Personally, I wouldn’t be able to survive being cooped up at home through a pandemic without some sort of creative outlet,” Stenson wrote. “I think it’s that way for a lot of artists and musicians creating content right now. It’s also keeping everyone entertained and provides some comfort, maybe a laugh or happiness, despite everything that’s going on. When people put their creations on the internet, they are connecting and relating to others without the need for in-person exchange.”
The gallery is part of the art council’s COVID-19 resource center at https://sburr23.wixsite.com/covid19-arts
Artists are limited to one piece per person and must be in a web compatible file (.png, .jpg, .mov, .mp4).
Submissions must include: Attached file of the work, artist’s name, town, the title of the piece, medium, price (if any), artist’s website, and/or social media handles.
The deadline for submission to the community gallery is Tuesday, May midnight.
Submissions can be made by emailing info@artsnwct.org with the subject line “VIRTUAL GALLERY SUBMISSION.”
Updates will be added to both the gallery and the council’s social media outlets: @artsnwct on Instagram and Facebook.com/artsnwct
