BARKHAMSTED — For 11 years, the town has held its River Run 5K to benefit Barkhamsted Elementary School’s PTO.
This year, due to the COVID-19 virus, the town will instead hold a Social Distance Run on the weekend of Friday, May 1 to Sunday, May 3.
To participate, the town is setting up a website where participants will be able to check-in and post photos of themselves walking or running in town.
“Given in light of everything that is going on right now, we decided that it was not possible to hold our annual run in its original format,” co-organizer and Barkhamsted PTO President Jennifer Grant said. “We decided to make this year’s event virtual which gives the community a chance to still go out and do their 5K. This will allow families to still participate in the event but in their own space and time. They can all go out on their own time and get some exercise, and it also allows them to take part in the event.”
Grant added that the entrant fee for the Social Distance Run has been dropped to $10 and all entrants will receive a t-shirt.
“This is a town tradition and we weren’t going to let COVID-19 stop it,” she said. “We want families to still enjoy the outdoors, but in a social distancing way.”
